“Damn any man who sympathizes with Indians! … I have come to kill Indians, and believe it is right and honorable to use any means under God’s heaven to kill Indians.”

—-  John Milton Chivington

The Sand Creek (federal enclave of Colorado) Massacre: Colonel John M. Chivington, commanding the compulsory Union First Colorado Cavalry Regiment, orders the lynching (execution without due process) of up to 163 unarmed men, women and children, of the Arapaho and Cheyenne nations—who were under federal protection.

       NOTES:

  • Chivington was careful to avoid contact with any groups who were actually capable of fighting back.
  • Before the War of Federal Aggression, Chivington had been a Methodist minister, and an opponent of slavery.

       Questions:

  • Who would Jesus kill?
  • Does God want Christians to kill non-believers (including Moslems) or minister to them?
