The First Battle of Derna (Cyrenaica) Lieutenant William Eaton, commanding, eight Marines of the Navy of the united States and a mercenary army of four-hundred recruited from Egypt, defeats a garrison force of four-thousand, deposes Pasha Yussif Karamanli, and installs his brother Hamet as the new Pasha, on the condition that the piracy on the Mediterranean will cease.

NOTE: The infant u.S. was too specie-poor to afford paying ransom and tribute to the Barbary Pirates, as the nations and realms of Europe had been doing.  As a result of the heroic actions by the Marines, free trade on the high seas became safer for everyone.
