Newport, Rhode Island merchants William Ellery, Samuel Vernon and Robert Crook lead a protest against the Stamp Act, carrying effigies of Augustus Johnson, the stamp distributor for the colony, and Thomas Moffat and Martin Howard Jr., two local loyalist conservatives, to some gallows, where they are hung.  That night, a mob led by a local pauper John Weber attacks the home Moffat and Howard destroying artwork, fences, furniture, walls and the wine cellars.
