James De Lancey, acting Royal Governor of the colony of New York, convenes the Albany Congress, a unicameral meeting of the colonies of New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and the Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.  The primary purpose of the convention is to discuss the formation of alliances with friendly indi(genous Americ)an tribes in the Fourth French and Indian War.

       Postscript: The delegates met for three weeks, and briefly considered the “Albany Plan” of colonial union devised by Delegate Benjamin Franklin, of the colony of Pennsylvania, that the Crown would appoint a president of the 13 colonies, who would coordinate military defense.
