The Battle of Fredericksburg (Virginia) ends): After five days of fighting, General Robert E. Lee, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Northern Virginia, defeats the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General Ambrose Burnside.  Almost 1,900 Americans were killed.
