The Battle of Gettysburg ends with Pickett’s Charge: Major General George Meade, commanding the compulsory Army of the Potomac, repels a Confederate assault on the middle of the Union line, led by the i Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by Lieutenant General James Longstreet.  Hardest hit is Major General George Pickett’s division, which suffered nearly 90% casualties.  Over 7,000 Americans are killed.
