Burnside’s “Mud March” begins: Major General Ambrose E. Burnside, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, launches a winter offensive against the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Northern Virginia, commanded by General Robert E. Lee.

Postscript: Unseasonably warm weather, rain, dissension among his staff and logistical blunders turned the campaign into a fiasco.  The Army of the Potomac suffered as many casualties as from a typical battle—without encountering a single Confederate Soldier.  A week later Commander in Chief Abraham Lincoln, of the united States, fired Burnside.
