The Battle of Fort Donelson (Tennessee) concludes: After four days of fighting, Confederate (a voluntary union) Brigadier General Simon B. Buckner surrenders his 15,000-man garrison, at Fort Donnellson, Tennessee, to Brigadier General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Tennessee. This opens up the Cumberland River as an avenue of invasion in central Tennessee. Over 800 Americans were killed in the Battle.
