The Battle of Shiloh/Pittsburg Landing (Tennessee) begins: General Albert Sidney Johnston, commanding the Confederate Army of Mississippi, attacks the compulsory Union Army of the Tennessee, commanded by Major General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant, in an effort to drive the Army of the united States out of Tennessee.
Postscript: The next day, Grant won the battle, with the help of Major General Don Carlos Buell, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Ohio. More Americans had lost their lives—including Johnston—than in all previous united States’ wars combined.
