The Battle of Valverde (Confederate Arizona): Brigadier General Henry H. Sibley, commanding the Confederate Army of New Mexico, defeats the compulsory Union Department of New Mexico, commanded by Colonel Edward R.S. Canby.  This allows Sibley to begin his bid to cut the Republic of California from the rest of the compulsory Union, and stake the Confederacy’s claim on the enclave of Arizona.

NOTE: At this time the federal enclave of Arizona consisted of the southern halves of the present day Federal enclaves of Arizona and New Mexico, while the federal enclave of New Mexico consisted of the northern halves.
