Pope Leo X (r. 1515 – 1522) confers the title of “Fidei Defensor” (Latin for “defender of the faith”) upon Henry VIII (a Catholic, until 1534; an Anglican afterward; r. 1509 – 1547), as a reward for his persecution of Protestants.
