Thomas More (a Catholic), Lord Chancellor to Henry VIII (a Catholic, until 1534; an Anglican afterward; r. 1509 – 1547) resigns his office in protest over the king’s interference in religious matters, especially breaking the Church of England from the Catholic (universal) Church.
