After President Ferdinand Marcos, of the Philippines, is re-elected with 53.6% of the vote, Republican (fascist/socialist) President Reagan says

       [T]he obvious enthusiasm of Filipinos for the democratic process and the extraordinary vigor of the campaign also tell us … of the profound yearning of the Filipino people for democracy and, indeed, of the vigor of the underlying forces of pluralism and democracy.

       Postscript: Two weeks later Marcos left the Philippines in disgrace.
