A United states Marshals firing squad executes John Doyle Lee, at the site of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, for his role in the mass-murder two decades previous.  This is a case of Double Jeopardy, as Lee had already been tried and acquitted three years before.  Prior to being put to death Lee wrote to Charles Devens, Attorney General, making a partial confession, but also implicating the man who adopted him, President (and former Governor of the federal enclave of Utah) Brigham Young of the Jesus Christ Church of Latter Day Saints.  En route to his execution, Lee was forced to suffer the indignity of riding atop the coffin in which he was to be buried.  Lee’s final words were, “I do not believe everything that is now being taught and practiced by Brigham Young.  I do not care who hears it.  It is my last word … I have been sacrificed in a cowardly, dastardly manner.”
