The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (Georgia): Major General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Tennessee, defeats the compulsory Union Military Division of the Mississippi, under the command of Major General William T. Sherman.

       NOTE: Nearly 4,000 Americans were killed at Kennesaw Mountain, making it one of the bloodiest battles of the Atlanta campaign.
