The Battle of Monocacy (Maryland): Lieutenant General Jubal A. Early, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of the Valley, defeats the compulsory Union Middle Department, of VIII Corps, commanded by Major General Lew Wallace.  This allows Early to continue his march on the District of Columbia, in an effort to relieve the Army of Northern Virginia, which is under siege at Petersburg.

NOTE: Nearly 2,000 Americans were killed.
