The Battle of the Wilderness (Virginia) concludes:  General Robert E. Lee, commander of the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Northern Virginia, after two days of fighting, defeats the compulsory Union Army of the Potomac, commanded by Major General George G. Meade.  At the end of the battle smoldering paper gunpowder cartridges set dried leaves on the ground ablaze; the fire burned approximately 200 wounded soldiers to death.  At least 11,000 Americans lost their lives in this battle.
