The Battle of Kennesaw Mountain (Georgia): General Joseph E. Johnston, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Tennessee, defeats the compulsory Union Military Division of the Mississippi, commanded by Major General William T. Sherman.

       NOTE: Nearly 4,000 Americans were killed at Kennesaw Mountain, making it one of the bloodiest battles of the Atlanta campaign.
