The Battle of Fort Donelson (Tennessee) concludes: After four days of fighting, Brigadier General John B. Floyd, of the Army of the Confederate States surrenders Fort Donelson to Brigadier General Ulysses Simpson (a.k.a. Hiram Ulysses) Grant, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Tennessee.  This opens up the Cumberland River as an avenue of invasion in central Tennessee.  Over 800 Americans were killed in the Battle.
