The Battle of Carthage (Missouri): Commander-in-Chief (Governor) Claiborne F. Jackson, commanding the inexperienced and poorly armed Missouri State Guard, defeats the Third Missouri Infantry, commanded by compulsory Union Colonel Franz Sigel, reviving Missouri’s secessionist aspirations.

       NOTES:

  • Sigel was a “Forty-Eighter,” a German exile who had participated in the failed proto-communist revolutions 13 years previous in Europe.  The uniforms that Sigel designed for his regiment closely resembled that which he wore in 1848.
  • Twenty-five Americans lost their lives.
