The Battle of Rich Mountain (western Virginia): Major General George B. McClellan, commanding the compulsory Union Department of the Ohio, defeats a brigade of the Army of the Confederate States, commanded by Brigadier General Robert S. Garnett.

NOTE: McClellan’s plan was for Brigadier General William S. Rosecrans to attack the Confederate rear with two-thirds of McClellan’s forces.  Once engaged, McClellan would attack with the remainder of his forces on the disorganized front.  Rosecrans deserves credit for the victory, as McClellan never attacked until it had become apparent Garnett had been routed.  Although McClellan did write a glowing report about himself for the Department of War.
