The Battle of Big Bethel (Virginia): In the first full-fledged land battle of the War of Federal Aggression, Brigadier General John B. Magruder, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of the Peninsula—outnumbered three-to-one—defeats the Militia of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, commanded by Brigadier General Ebenezer W. Peirce (sic).
NOTE: Nineteen Americans were killed in the battle.
