The Battle of the Chesapeake (Bay): After four days of fighting, Admiral Francois-Joseph Paul comte de Grasse, commanding a fleet of 28 vessels of the Navy of France, defeats a fleet of 19 ships, commanded by Admiral Thomas Graves, of the Royal Navy.  This blocks Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis’ retreat by sea.
