After a three-month siege, Hernan Cortes captures Tenochtitlan, the capital of the Aztec Empire.

       Postscript: Spain’s conquest of the Aztecs and other cultures made it the richest kingdom in the world.  But the Spanish did not expand their economy with its new found wealth.  Instead the Spanish Crown embarked on twin luxury and military spending binges, which left it heavily indebted and eventually bankrupt.
