The National Constituent Assembly, of the Republic of France, authorizes a new issue of 800,000,000 new assignats, in addition to the 400,000,000 that had already been issued.  The original 400,000,000 had been tied to the value of confiscated Catholic (state) Church lands.  Any notes redeemed for land are to be destroyed; and the amount of assignats in circulation is never to exceed 1,200,000,000.  In a worst case scenario this reduces the purchasing power of the original issue by two-thirds.

       Postscript: This touched of an inflation rate that averaged 2,600% per year for the next five years.
