General in Chief Lucas Rincon Romero, of the Army of Venezuela and President Pedro Carmona, of the Venezuelan Federation of Chambers of Commerce—with assistance from the Central Intelligence Agency—lead a coup detat against President Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias, of Venezuela.
Postscript: Two days later, because of intense public opposition, the coup collapsed, and Chavez was restored to power.
NOTES:
- Republican de facto President George W. Bush (having received the unlawful advantage of 41 ineligible Electoral votes) immediately recognized Carmona as interim president, but then condemned the coup when it had failed.
- A year previous, Venezuela’s ambassador to Russia spoke of Venezuela switching to the Euro for all their oil sales.
