The Battle of Brice’s Cross Roads/Tishomingo Creek (Mississippi): Confederate (a voluntary union) Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest, commanding his cavalry corps—out numbered two-to-one—defeats the compulsory Union Meridian Mississippi Expedition Brigade, commanded by Brigadier General Samuel D. Sturgis.

       Postscript: Upon returning to the Military Division of the Mississippi headquarters, in Memphis, Tennessee, Sturgis requested of Major General William T. Sherman, division commander, to be relieved of command.
