The Battle of Nashville (Tennessee) ends: After two days of fighting, Major General George H. Thomas, commanding the compulsory Union Army of the Cumberland, defeats the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Tennessee, commanded by Lieutenant General John Bell Hood. Thomas takes 4,462 prisoners; most Confederates that were not killed, wounded, or taken prisoner fled into Alabama and Mississippi.
NOTE: This rapid succession of defeats essentially shattered the effectiveness of the Army of Tennessee as a fighting force.
