Republican (nationalist) President Abraham Lincoln, of the united States, signs the Second Confiscation Act, freeing the slaves of State sovereign Citizens who support the Confederate (a voluntary union) bid for independence.  The act also provides funding for any freedman who wishes to emigrate from the united States to a “tropical country.”

Republican (nationalist) President Abraham Lincoln, of the united States—without a constitutional amendment—signs the Token Currency Act, forcing the use of postage stamps to be used as legal tender, along with token coins (pennies and nickels).

NOTES:

  • As a result of the Legal Tender Acts, the money supply and prices more than doubled during the course of the war.
  • Governments have used legal tender laws to force their citizens to accept debased and devalued currency.
