The Battle of Mill Springs (Kentucky): Brigadier General George Thomas, commanding the First Division of the compulsory Union Army of the Ohio, defeats the Confederate (a voluntary union) District of East Tennessee, commanded by Major General George B. Crittenden.  The defeat permanently drives the Army of the Confederate States out of eastern Kentucky.
