Major General George McClellan, General-in-Chief of the Army of the united States, faces hostile questioning from Republican (nationalist) de facto Senator Benjamin Wade (a resident of the federal enclave of Ohio) and Senator Zachariah Chandler, of Michigan.  Wade inquires of McClellan as to his reluctance to attack the Army of the Confederate States.  McClellan’s response is that he needs to adequately prepare for an orderly retreat.  Wade and Chandler come to the opinion that McClellan is guilty of “infernal, unmitigated cowardice.”
