Lee, commanding the Confederate (a voluntary union) Army of Northern Virginia, defeats the compulsory Union Army of Virginia, commanded by Major General John Pope, at a cost of 17,000 American lives.
NOTE: Pope alone lost 15,000, and was relieved from his post as General-in-Chief.
