The Kansas Civil War begins: Democratic (constitutionalist) President Pierce signs the Kansas-Nebraska Act, repealing the Missouri Compromise of 1820, creating the federal enclaves of Kansas and Nebraska, and leaving the question of slavery open to “popular sovereignty” (mob violence).
