       Republican (constitutionalist) President Jefferson signs the Naturalization Act of 1802, lowering the 14-year residency requirement for State sovereign citizenship to five years.

       NOTES:

  • No restrictions were placed on immigration;
  • Citizenship was limited to immigrants of European heritage.
