1643/07/01

At the call of the Long Parliament—and against the wishes of Charles I (a Presbyterian, r. 1625 – 1649) and William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury (an Anglican)—the Westminster Assembly of Divines convenes in Westminster Abbey.  The purpose of the Puritan dominated assembly is to purge the (Anglican) Church of England of all Catholic influences.
