The Fifth Parliament (the “Long Parliament”) of Charles I dispatches the Propositions of Uxbridge to the king at Oxford. There are 27 articles, numbers 2, 5, 14, 17, 20, 21 and 23 of which:
- Require the king to sign and adhere to the Solemn League and Covenant;
- The Churches of England and Scotland be brought into the greatest possible uniformity;
- Control of the Armies of England and Scotland brought under an independent commission;
- Parliamentary confirmation of all royal appointments made to the House of Lords;
- Parliamentary confirmation of all royal appointments of officers and judges;
- Education and marriage of the king’s children subject to the control of Parliament;
- The power to declare war and make peace subject to Parliament.
