Charles II (a secret Catholic, r. 1649 – 1651, in Scotland; 1660 – 1685, in England and Scotland) signs the Solemn League and Covenant, by which he agrees to support the English Parliament in return for further civil and religious unity between England and Scotland under a Presbyterian (Church of Scotland) parliament.
