Charles I (a Presbyterian, r. 1625 – 1649) assembles his Fifth Parliament (a.k.a. the “Long Parliament”) for the purpose of raising taxes to pay for suppressing civil unrest in Scotland and Ireland.
Postscript: The Long Parliament was so named because it was in session for over eight years—until Pride’s Purge.
