Charles I (a Presbyterian, r. 1625 – 1649) lends his assent to the Habeas Corpus Act of 1640, placing restrictions on the king’s Privy Council (advisors); and abolishing the Star Chamber, a secret court with restricted rights of Due Process, and the authority to impose excessive fines and inflict unusual punishments.
