Soldiers loyal to Mary I (a Catholic, r. 1553 – 1558) behead deposed Queen Jane (an Anglican, r. 1553).  Jane refused to renounce Protestantism and accept the authority: of the Pope.  Mary is given the derisive moniker of “Bloody” by her opponents.
