Following the death of Elizabeth I (an Anglican, r. 1558 – 1603), the last of the House of Tudor, the Crown passes to the House of Stuart, with James VI (a Presbyterian, r. 1566 – 1625), of Scotland, its first sovereign. He now becomes James I (r. 1603 – 1625), ruling both England and Scotland simultaneously.
