“Bloody” Mary I (a Catholic, r. 1553 – 1558) dies of influenza, aggravated by congenital syphilis, which she inherited from her father Henry VIII (an Anglican, r. 1509 – 1547). The Crown now passes to her half-sister Elizabeth (an Anglican, r. 1558 – 1603). Elizabeth begins reprisals against Mary’s Catholic supporters. This earns Elizabeth the moniker “Good Queen Bess.”
