The First Crusade begins: Pope Urban II (r. 1088 – 1099), at the request of Alexios I, of the Byzantine Empire (a.k.a. Eastern Roman Empire), calls on the Catholic sovereigns in his realm to liberate Jerusalem from the Moslem Seljuk Turks. The Turks had been threatening to overrun the BE, and the initiative towards Jerusalem was seen as a way of taking the pressure of the remnants of the ERE.
