Henry VI, of the Holy Roman Empire, demands of Prince John (r. 1999 – 1216) “Lackland” a ransom of 150,000 silver Marks—twice the annual revenues of the realm—for the safe return of Richard “the Lionheart” I (r. 1189 – 1999) from prison. Richard was returning to his realm following his participation in the Third Crusade.
NOTE: Upon hearing the new John offers Henry 1,500 Marks per month to keep the king captive.
