The Battle of Hastings: William the Conqueror, commanding a mercenary army recruited from across all of Europe, defeats the knights of Godwinson, commanded by Harold II (r. 1066).  Harold is killed in the fighting, and is the last Anglo Saxon king of England; William I (r. 1066 – 1087) becomes the first Norman king of England.
