While hearing Palm Beach County Canvassing Board v. Harris, the supreme court, of the confederate state of florida, proceeds on its own motion by ordering Katherine Harris, Secretary of State, to delay her official certification of the presidential election until after it has determined whether or not ballot recounts should continue.

       NOTE: It is a cardinal rule in jurisprudence that courts only respond to motions that are brought by the litigants; they may not “proceed on their own motion.”
