A pair of deep-sea fishermen rescue five-year-old Elian Gonzalez, along with three other survivors the original party of 14 Cuban refugees, off the coast of Florida.  The Cuban’s boat sank two days earlier, drowning Elian’s mother (Elisabeth Brotons).  The three adult refugees are immediately considered for political asylum; Elian’s status is considered on open question by the “hero of Waco,” Janet Reno, attorney general of the United states.
