The Revolutions of 1989 continue: In the face of increasing public opposition to authoritarian rule, the Politburo (party executive committee) delivers an ultimatum to Todor H. Zhivkov, Todor Zhivkov, dictator of communist Bulgaria since 1954, that he either resign or suffer summary execution.  Petar T. Mladenov, Zhivkov’s successor, immediately repeals restrictions on the Freedoms of Speech and Assembly.

Postscript: A month later Mladenov called upon the Communist Party to give up its monopoly on political power.
