PATRIOTS DAY: While engaging in firing exercises 350 miles northeast of the Federal enclave of Puerto Rico, Number Two Turret on the USS Iowa explodes killing 47 Sailors and officers.
Postscript: In an internal review, Rear Admiral (lower half) Richard D. Milligan concluded that the explosion was deliberately caused by a suicidal Gunner’s Mate Second Class Clayton M. Hartwig, who was despondent over the break-up of a homosexual affair with a fellow Sailor. A second investigation ordered by the senate, and conducted by the General Accounting Office, concluded that Milligan was trying to cover-up incompetence by the Iowa‘s officers.
