The Iranian Hostage crisis begins: Approximately 200 Shi’ite (partisans of Ali) Muslim Students of the Imam Khomeini storm the United states’ embassy, taking 63 department of state employees (French for “government workers”) and U.s. Armed Forces (private mercenaries) hostage until the exiled Shah Mohammed Reza is returned to stand trial for assorted crimes under his reign.
